It Wasn’t Supposed to Happen’: The Scene in Pretty Woman That Made History

n the 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman, one of the most memorable scenes features Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) presenting Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) with an exquisite necklace. As Vivian reaches out to touch the jewelry, Edward playfully snaps the box shut, eliciting a genuine, hearty laugh from her. This charming moment has become iconic, but it was never part of the original script.
For a visual glimpse of this iconic scene, here’s a brief clip:

Director Garry Marshall revealed that the scene was improvised. Noticing that Roberts occasionally appeared tired on set, Marshall suggested to Gere, “Richard, you gotta wake her up a little, so when she reaches for the box, slam it.” The intent was to surprise Roberts, and her spontaneous reaction was so endearing that Marshall decided to include it in the final cut of the film.

This unscripted interaction not only added authenticity to the characters’ relationship but also showcased the natural chemistry between Roberts and Gere. The scene has since become one of the most beloved moments in cinematic history, exemplifying how spontaneous creativity can lead to unforgettable film magic.
