Why Richard Gere Decided to Leave the US and Relocate to Spain

Richard Gere, an iconic actor whose work has shaped American cinema, has remained a beloved figure in Hollywood for over five decades. Known for his roles in films like Pretty Woman, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Chicago, Gere has captivated audiences with his diverse performances. Despite his fame, the actor has long preferred a life away from the Hollywood spotlight, focusing on humanitarian efforts and personal pursuits that align with his values.

In 2024, Gere made a surprising decision to leave the United States and move to Spain with his family. This move was influenced by his Spanish wife, Alejandra Silva, and her strong ties to her home country. Gere expressed excitement about the adventure, noting that he had never lived full-time outside the U.S. and felt it was time to experience life in Madrid, a city he admires for its vibrant culture and joyful lifestyle. He shared that he hoped this would be a great opportunity for their children to connect with their Spanish heritage.

Richard and Alejandra’s decision also includes a personal sacrifice—selling their Connecticut estate, a property they had purchased from musician Paul Simon. The sale, while marking a financial loss, reflected Gere’s commitment to embracing this new chapter of their lives. The estate, nestled on nearly 32 acres of countryside, had been a peaceful retreat for the couple, but it was clear that their future lay across the Atlantic.

As Richard Gere prepares for this major life transition, he looks forward to immersing himself in Spain’s rich culture, where he and his family can enjoy a quieter, more relaxed lifestyle. For Gere, the move symbolizes not just a physical relocation, but a deepening of his commitment to family, happiness, and the opportunities that lie ahead in Spain.
